US, Ukraine explore possible Zelensky visit to Washington

(MENAFN) US and Ukrainian officials are reportedly exploring the possibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visiting Washington next week, according to reports. The potential trip is linked to US President Donald Trump’s push to finalize a peace deal in Ukraine by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Officials familiar with the discussions said that Zelenskyy’s decision will depend on the outcomes of ongoing peace talks in Geneva. The negotiations focus on a 28-point US peace proposal, which calls for Ukraine to make concessions on territory, limit the size of its military, and abandon its bid to join NATO.

A senior White House official noted that no concrete plans for a visit exist yet due to the ongoing diplomacy. As an alternative, US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll may travel to meet Russian officials depending on the Geneva discussions.

Trump has requested a response from Zelenskyy by Thursday, criticizing Ukraine’s leadership for demonstrating “zero gratitude” for American efforts to end the war with Russia. Zelenskyy commented that he faces a decision between “the loss of our dignity or the risk of losing a key partner.”
