City continues to monitor Tropical Storm Nolo as the system nears hurricane strength
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Nolo as the system strengthens south of the Hawaiian Islands and approaches hurricane strength.
As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Nolo was located approximately 455 miles south-southeast of Honolulu, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. The storm was moving north at 2 mph.
Nolo is forecast to become a hurricane tonight and could reach major hurricane strength this weekend as it moves closer to the Hawaiian Islands. Forecasters expect the storm to move north or north-northeast through Friday before making a sharp turn west on Saturday near Hawaiʻi Island.
A Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for Hawaiʻi County, where a Hurricane Watch also remains in effect. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Maui County.
While the most significant impacts are still forecast for Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County, City officials remind Oʻahu residents that Nolo remains a developing storm, and changes in its track or intensity could affect conditions on Oʻahu.
Based on the current forecast, Oʻahu is not expected to experience the severe conditions anticipated for Hawaiʻi Island. However, Oʻahu could still see strong, gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and elevated surf as Nolo moves through the region.
The City’s Department of Emergency Management continues to coordinate closely with the National Weather Service, state emergency management officials and City departments. City agencies are reviewing staffing, equipment, and operational plans so they can respond quickly if the forecast changes.
For Oʻahu residents, the next 24 to 48 hours will be important. Nolo’s track and intensity will continue to come into sharper focus, giving forecasters a better picture of what conditions the island could experience this weekend.
The City is asking residents to watch Nolo as they plan for the weekend, especially for outdoor activities, travel, and time near the ocean. Conditions could change depending on the storm’s eventual track.
The City will continue to evaluate the forecast and announce any changes to City operations or services if needed.
If conditions on Oʻahu remain manageable, the City also stands ready to support Hawaiʻi Island or Maui County with personnel and resources if assistance is requested.
